Last night fans betting on the Toronto Blue Jays vs. San Diego Padres, could also bet on the weather at various Sportsbook's. If fans betting online had wagered on an earthquake occurring, they would have made a large amount of money. During the eighth inning, with the Jays up six to three, nature took over as a five point seven magnitude earthquake tremor shook Petco Park. The quake however, was actually taking place 135 kilometers east of San Diego in Imperial County. As a result of the quake, both dugouts along with the right foul pole all swung from side to side for a moment.

Conversely, the win snapped a three game losing streak for the Blue Jays who were swept over the weekend by the Colorado Rockies, in perhaps their most disappointing series of the season. Not only were the Jays outscored 41-13 in the last seven games, but the starting pitching which has been the team's back bone, appeared amateurish at best. Going into the game last night, the pitching matchup of Jays righty Shaun Marcum vs. Padres staff ace John Garland, appeared to be in favor of the Padres, as the Jays have been Garland's favorite team to face. Over his 10 seasons in the big leagues, and going into last night's ball game, Garland had gone 11 wins and two losses with an earned run average under three against the Canadian club. Making matters worse, was the fact that the Jay's two biggest offensive threats, center fielder Vernon Wells and glorified utility man Jose Bautista had gone a whopping two for 38 in their last seven games.

With the odds heavily stacked in San Diego's favor last night, it was catcher John Buck with two home runs and three runs batted in and struggling second baseman Aaron Hill three doubles and three runs batted in, leading the charge over Garland and the Padres. The six run outburst was the first of its kind for the Jays in the last two weeks. Marcum also pitched solid for the Jays over seven while closer Kevin Gregg picked up his 16th save in 19 opportunities.
